Each year, designers and creatives across the globe eagerly anticipate the announcement of Pantone’s Color of the Year—a decision that sets the tone for trends in fashion, interior design, graphic design, and beyond. As we step into 2025, Pantone has unveiled its Color of the Year: Mocha Mousse.
This rich and versatile color, known officially as Pantone 17-1230, exudes timeless elegance with subtle undertones of taupe and cream. Inspired by the velvety indulgence of its namesake dessert, Mocha Mousse captures the essence of comfort, connection, and harmony, making it a good reflection of the cultural desires of the coming year.
Why Mocha Mousse for 2025?
In recent years, Pantone’s color choices have mirrored societal shifts. The bold Viva Magenta of 2023 symbolized courage and innovation, while Peach Fuzz in 2024 offered a soft, nurturing optimism. Now, 2025 moves towards serenity and earthy refinement with Mocha Mousse, a color that fosters peace, stability, and luxury.
“Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director Pantone Color Institute. “Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe.”
Mocha Mousse also aligns with the growing trend of mindfulness and reconnection—with ourselves, our communities, and the natural world. Its earthy warmth reflects authenticity and stability, while its understated sophistication complements a move toward meaningful living.
“We want some peace,” explains Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “We want to feel content … So there’s an airiness and a light feeling to this color. Yeah, it’s a brown, but it’s not a heavy brown.”
Striking the perfect balance between nostalgia and modernity, it’s a hue for both comfort and growth.
In Golf Fashion
Mocha Mousse is poised to become a staple in fashion for 2025. Its neutral tone is rather ideal for golf, given its sophisticated elegance and unisex versatility. Mocha Mousse can serve as a base color in your collection, offering a sophisticated alternative to black, gray, or beige.
This brown hue also works year-round, making it ideal for building trans-seasonal collections. For example,
- Spring/Summer: Pair Mocha Mousse with lighter shades like blush pink, cream, or pastel blue for an airy, fresh look.
- Fall/Winter: Complement this shade with deeper jewel tones like emerald, navy, or chocolate brown.
- Accessorizing: This hue has a neutral undertone, making it complementary with both silver and gold.
With the cultural move towards capsule wardrobe pieces, this hue is perfect to add to your collection.
Its grounding and versatile nature complements golf’s natural setting, timeless aesthetic, and contemporary appeal. By incorporating this shade into golf gear and apparel, you can appeal to both traditionalists and modern enthusiasts, fostering a sense of timeless elegance and innovation.
The History of Pantone’s Color of the Year
Pantone launched its Color of the Year initiative in 2000 to establish a unified way of capturing global trends through color. The selection process is comprehensive, involving year-long research into art, entertainment, fashion, politics, technology, and global events. Each chosen hue reflects a collective sentiment, setting the creative and cultural tone for the coming year.
Over the years, the Color of the Year has influenced product development and design choices across industries, symbolizing not only aesthetic appeal but also deeper emotional and cultural resonance.
A Year of Comfort and Sophistication
Mocha Mousse represents more than just a color—it embodies a mindset of grounding, connection, harmony, and understated elegance. From fashion runways to golf courses, it is set to define 2025 as a year of comfort, stability, and sophistication.
