As Congressional Country Club approached its 100-year anniversary in 2024, the team set out to do more than just honor its storied legacy. They aimed to transform the occasion into a powerful retail opportunity. Through thoughtful branding, immersive storytelling, and a creative merchandising strategy, the club turned its centennial into an unforgettable member experience.
Launching the Centennial Logo and Holiday Rollout
The first step in the campaign was the creation and early unveiling of a custom 100-year logo, inspired by a historic leather-bound invitation originally presented to the club’s first honorary members. This logo blended tradition and elegance by incorporating elements such as interlocking C’s, the founding year “1924” in Old English type, and crossed golf clubs.
To introduce the logo, Congressional Country Club created a “Celebrating the Centennial in Style” feature inside its Holiday Gift Guide. The eight-page digital spread showcased logo-branded apparel and gifts, modeled in iconic locations across the property. A short embedded video, featuring the Director of Athletics demonstrating the functionality of featured garments, added dynamic value and increased engagement. Within the first 48 hours, the guide was opened nearly 1,000 times, leading to a sharp increase in holiday sales compared to the previous year.
Creating Demand Through Exclusivity
To maintain excitement throughout the year, the team partnered with G/FORE to design a limited-edition golf shoe exclusively for the club. Each shoe included the Centennial logo on the heel and a custom footbed print, with only 100 pairs produced. A teaser image released ahead of launch created buzz, and an online ordering form streamlined the pre-sale process. More than 85% of inventory sold before the shoes even arrived at the club.
Another collector’s item — a limited-edition hickory-shaft putter — was released in collaboration with Tad Moore. Only 100 pieces were produced, each engraved with the Centennial logo and individually numbered. These putters quickly sold out and accounted for more than 40% of total hardgoods revenue for the month of their launch.
The Centennial Corner: A Shop Within a Shop
To give the merchandise a dedicated home, the club transformed a prominent area near the clubhouse entrance into the “Centennial Corner.” This curated space opened during Memorial Day weekend, timed to coincide with the club’s large-scale centennial celebration. It featured a full range of exclusive items including apparel, drinkware, totes, accessories, and private label pieces.
The design of the area included educational and interactive elements, such as a shadow box displaying the inspiration behind the logo, framed invitations, and a QR code linking to a digital history guide. The result was a shopping experience that was both immersive and informative — and a strong contributor to merchandise movement over the holiday weekend.
Custom Labels, Toile Prints, and Storytelling Details
The Centennial Collection’s private label line brought an elevated touch to the campaign. Each piece included a custom sewn-in label and gold-accented hangtags referencing the original 1924 invitation. These small details helped members feel they were purchasing not just apparel, but a piece of club history.
To further honor the club’s legacy, the team designed a 1920s-inspired “toile” print — a French Country-style pattern featuring vintage golfers, cherry blossoms, and clubhouse illustrations. Applied to a variety of silhouettes and accessories, the print was particularly well received among women members and achieved a strong sell-through rate in its first few months.
Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future
The success of Congressional Country Club’s Centennial campaign didn’t just come from limited-edition products or carefully timed promotions. It came from a commitment to storytelling, brand integrity, and member connection. Every detail — from the design of a custom toile print to the engraved hickory-shaft putters — served as a tribute to the club’s enduring legacy while offering members something meaningful to take home.
By anchoring its retail strategy in the heart of the club’s identity, the club proved that milestone moments are more than anniversaries — they’re opportunities to engage your community, strengthen your brand, and create memories that last well beyond the celebration.
Congratulations, Congressional Country Club, for 100 years of elevating the standard of golf and hospitality — and for celebrating it in unforgettable style.
