When I first became involved with the Association of Golf Merchandisers, I viewed it as a lifeline. As a young and relatively inexperienced professional, I wanted to surround myself with people who could help me learn, grow, and navigate the industry. I quickly discovered that the AGM was an invaluable resource for education, networking, and staying current with industry trends. What I didn’t realize then was how profoundly active participation would shape my career and the relationships that would become one of the most rewarding aspects of my professional journey.
Like many members, I started by attending events, participating in educational opportunities, and connecting with fellow merchandisers. I simply raised my hand whenever help was needed. Over the past 30-plus years as a member, I have served on committees, written articles, stuffed swag bags, judged awards, and contributed in countless other ways.
I initially volunteered because I knew our organization needed extra hands, but also because I was looking to build connections with others in the industry. Over time, those simple interactions grew into something far more meaningful. Colleagues became trusted resources. Vendors became valued partners. Industry contacts became lifelong friends.
What began as volunteer service ultimately became one of the most rewarding aspects of my professional journey. The relationships I have built through the Association have provided support, inspiration, and opportunities that have enriched both my career and my life.
Relationships That Go Beyond Business
One of the greatest strengths of the AGM is that it provides opportunities to move beyond a membership card and become part of a community. Whether it’s serving on a committee, volunteering at events, participating in webinars, attending the AGM Conference, or simply reaching out to another member with a question, every level of involvement creates an opportunity to learn and grow.
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the headquarters of one of our long-standing industry partners. What stood out to me wasn’t simply the work we accomplished. It was the reminder that meaningful business relationships are built over years of trust, collaboration, and mutual support. Those relationships often begin with a conversation at an AGM event, a committee meeting, or a shared educational experience.
Throughout my career, I’ve found that some of the most valuable ideas have come from relationships cultivated through the AGM. I’ve leaned on fellow merchandisers for advice, shared best practices with peers, and worked alongside vendor partners who genuinely wanted to help our operation succeed. Those connections continue to make me a better professional today.
Looking back, none of those opportunities arrived because I had all the answers. They came because I chose to participate. Every committee meeting, conference conversation, volunteer assignment, and educational program opened a new door. That’s the real value of membership: not just what the Association provides, but what we choose to do with the opportunities it creates.
Make the Most of Your Membership
For members who are wondering how to get more value from their membership, my advice is simple: get involved.
Attend a webinar and ask a question.
Volunteer for a committee.
Apply for an award program.
Participate in the annual conference.
Reach out to someone you’ve always wanted to meet.
Offer your expertise to a fellow member.
The AGM creates opportunities, but its true value comes from the people who engage with it. Whether you’re a new member attending your first event or a longtime member considering a new volunteer role, there’s always another way to contribute, connect, and grow. My career has been enriched by the relationships, experiences, and opportunities I’ve gained through this community, and I hope you’ll discover the same. The more you invest in your membership, the more meaningful and rewarding it becomes.
