Mother’s Day brings a different kind of shopper into the golf shop, and not all of them are shopping the same way.
Some are husbands or kids looking to find a piece that feels thoughtful and personal. Others are just hoping to grab something easy, quick, and wonderfully giftable. And then there are the moms who want to treat themselves to something special.
This is where merchandising really matters. A strong display reaches all of those shoppers, removing friction and building confidence for everyone who walks in.
Looking at displays from shops across the country, a few strategies consistently rise to the top. Let’s take a look at some details that move a display from “nice” to truly effective.
Start With a Gift-First Mindset
The strongest displays are built around gifting. Instead of presenting individual pieces, show complete ideas such as:
- Styled outfits that remove decision fatigue
- Apparel paired with accessories
- Groupings that feel ready to give
This approach simplifies the shopping experience. When a customer can immediately see a full gift, they are far more likely to purchase without hesitation.
Items to Include In Your Displays:
- Hats
- Jewelry
- Tumblers and drinkware
- Bags
- Golf balls
- Candles
- Local food items
- Mother’s Day greeting cards
- Children’s clothing, toys, and accessories
Including children’s products can be a nice reminder of motherhood and its joys. It could also bring up memories for older members of “the good ole days” of when their kids or grandkids were young. Keep in mind that this should only be a limited part of the display, as the purpose is for the mother, not her kids.
This transforms the display into a gifting destination rather than a single-category presentation and naturally increases average transaction value. The less a customer has to piece together, the more likely they are to walk away with something in hand.
Utilize Signage
Signage plays an important role in a Mother’s Day display, but it should do more than simply label a product. As a baseline, clear messaging like:
- “MOM”
- “Happy Mother’s Day”
- “Grandma”
- “For Mom”
- “For the mother in your life”
…tend to resonate well. It acts both as a reminder that the holiday is coming and an offer of timely gifting solutions.
If you want to add something fun for those who don’t have children, you can highlight the “Dog Moms” or “Plant Moms” of your club and include correlating gifts and accessories.
Honor Her
Motherhood is a grand and often misunderstood role that deserves to be celebrated. Take the time to add small, thoughtful touches to your displays and sales offerings this season to make her feel honored and seen. Some ways to do this include:
- Jar full of written affirmations that customers can pull from (my favorite)
- Meaningful quotes on a quote board
- Bowl of complimentary candy “for someone who’s so sweet”
These elements shift the experience from being purely transactional to something more personal. They slow the customer down, create a moment, make the mothers feel appreciated, and help gift-givers feel confident that what they’re choosing carries meaning. And when a display feels meaningful, the product attached to it becomes much easier to say yes to.
Create a Cohesive Spring Color Story
Color is often what catches a customer’s eye first. A spring, feminine color palette including:
- Soft pastels like pink, blue, and green
- Light neutrals such as white and cream
- Fresh seasonal accents through florals and prints
…are always winners. Even when incorporating brighter tones, balance them out to maintain a clean, spring-forward feel. A cohesive color story creates visual clarity and makes the display easier to shop.
Use Height and Props to Add Interest
As with any visual display, height and layering help create a more engaging presentation. Think in terms of variation. Mix in tiered tables, risers, or crates. Pair mannequins with folded product. Add vertical elements like florals or signage to draw the eye upward.
This not only helps the display stand out from across the shop, but also gives you space to showcase more product without feeling cluttered.
When it comes to props, keep them intentional. Florals and greenery that tie back to your color palette can soften the display, while thoughtful signage or small interactive touches can reinforce the emotional connection behind the gift.
Wrapping Up
When your displays are built with gifting in mind, supported by clear messaging, and layered with thoughtful details, they naturally become easier to shop and more impactful.
At the end of the day, the goal is simple: make it easy for someone to choose a gift that feels just as meaningful as the person they’re buying it for.
And if you are a mother, congratulations! We hope you feel truly appreciated this season, both in and beyond the shop.
