Step Up Your Golf Style with TB Phelps: Quality Goods Since 1938

For over eight decades, TB Phelps has been synonymous with luxury and performance in golf footwear. Jimmy Glass, Director of Golf, sheds light on the brand’s enduring success, emphasizing its dedication to quality and customization. From the iconic Fairway XV Classic to exciting new product launches, Glass provides an in-depth look at what sets TB Phelps apart.

AGM: Can you share the story behind one of your best-selling golf products?

TB P: The Fairway XV Classic Waterproof, Leather Hybrid Shoe. This calf leather upper passes the rigid Stroble waterproof test where the leather is flexed 15,000 times, proving the leather does not leak. This is combined with our 4-ply Poron memory foam comfort system, full cowhide lining, and 144 multifaceted stability studs designed to be worn at work and the golf course. We created the perfect hybrid stylish shoe for multiple uses.

AGM: How do you ensure the quality and durability of your products?

TB P: TB Phelps only uses the finest North American leather, highest quality 4 -layer poron cushioning, cowhide leather lining, and high-density rubber out soles. We have a long-standing relationship with the finest manufacturing facilities in South America, using the hand-sewn techniques and the wet lasting process to create a long lasting product. Our shoes must be functional, comfortable, and fit properly to assure the success of our brand.

AGM: How do you keep your brand relevant to both young golfers and seasoned players?

TB P: We do this through great shop displays, our PUD Program for staff to be seen in our product, both young assistants and professionals. Lastly, our event microsite support. When members and guests receive our product at events and experience, our quality and fit, they become fans of the brand.

AGM: What are your key strategies for building brand awareness and affinity among golfers?

TB P: We participate in both regional and PGA national shows to maintain visibility and introduce new products. Our advertising is focused directly to the club through targeted seasonal email blasts and using the AGM to reach their members.

AGM: What are upcoming product launches or innovations that golf retailers should look forward to?

TB P: We have created a new signet bridge bit logo program. A patented process that allows customers to change their bridge bit on several of our bit shoes. Customers can change for a solid bit to a rope bit in their favorite colors. In addition, we can now engrave a club logo or initials in both the shoe and belt buckle. TB Phelps has taken customization to a new level.

AGM: How do you support golf retailers in marketing and selling your products?

TB P: We created a golf shop-only shield partnership. For a minimal investment in shoes and belts, our customers receive free shipping on their initial order, avoid small order fees, and have the flexibility to return and freshen up their assortments during the year and at the end of their season for full credit. We also have beautiful, upscale, pop signage to display with our products.

AGM: what role does feedback from golf professionals/buyers play in your product development?

TB P: We always listen to what our customers are saying about styling, colors, and fit, and take their feedback very seriously to make sure we are up-to-date and developing products that are most desirable for them.

AGM: How do you educate retailers and their staff about your products?

TB P: Through one-on-one meetings with our professional sales force. We rely on them to visit the shops, build strong relationships with buyers, and teach them all about the quality materials that sets apart the TB Phelps Brand.

AGM: What strategies do you recommend for merchandising your products effectively?

TB P: We suggest our shoes are presented together with coordinating belts rolled up and displayed in the heel of the appropriate shoe, along with our upscale pop sign. Merchandising them together in volume will increase the visibility and profitability of a multiple sale. Another successful technique is to incorporate one of our shoes and its corresponding belt on a display table featuring an apparel collection. This is to show the customer what the right shoe and belt would be for an outfit, again improving the chance of an add-on sale.

AGM: What message would you like to leave with AGM members about your brand and products?

TB P: TB Phelps has been producing leather goods since 1938. We are committed to the golf business by offering the largest in-stock inventory of all of our competitors to ensure our customers can service their member needs. We produce a wide assortment of the finest leather shoes from size 7 to 15 in medium and wide width. Our belts range from size 20 through 46 to fit juniors and adults alike. Lastly, we now have the option to customize your club logo by having it stamped in the insole, or engraved on a shoe bridge bit or belt buckle. TB Phelps is committed to being your partner and source for fine men’s footwear and belts.

With a rich history and a bright future, TB Phelps is poised to remain a cornerstone in the golf industry. AGM Members are encouraged to learn more about TB Phelps and its products by visiting tbphelps.com or contacting Jimmy Glass at jglass@tbphelps.com
