Of all the trends to emerge from the 2026 PGA Show, one of the most interesting was also one of the oldest. Amongst the apparel, accessories, and tech was mahjong, a Chinese tile game that has experienced a remarkable resurgence across the United States in recent years.
Now, that interest is making its way into golf and country clubs. Weekly groups, tournaments, and social events are giving members another way to gather, while custom club-branded sets and accessories are creating an opportunity for golf shops to get involved, too.
It might be time to make room for another game at the clubhouse table. While golf obviously remains the focal point of the member experience, mahjong gives members another way to gather, particularly when weather, seasonality, or simply a day off from golf keeps them off the course.
What Is Mahjong?
Mahjong is a strategy game originating in China during the 19th century. Traditionally played with 144 engraved tiles by four players, the game combines strategy, pattern recognition, memory, and a bit of luck. The sheer number of rules can seem intimidating at first glance, however many players quickly discover that the challenge is part of the fun. Like golf, it is a game that rewards experience while remaining enjoyable for players of varying skill levels. Perhaps most importantly, mahjong is inherently social. Every game creates opportunities for conversation, laughter, friendly competition, and connection, no matter the season.
More Than Just a Game
For many clubs, mahjong has become another way to bring members together.
Weekly games create consistent touchpoints for members who may not be playing golf that day, while clinics and beginner sessions give newcomers a way to get involved. The game appeals to longtime players and newcomers alike, often creating friendships that extend well beyond the table.
And that is part of what makes mahjong so interesting for clubs. As clubs look for ways to keep members involved throughout the year, mahjong offers another reason to come in, pull up a chair, and spend time with other members.
Merchandising Mahjong
For golf retailers, the rise of mahjong opens the door to an entirely new merchandise category. So, how can you get your tiles in a row and tap into it?
Start with the game itself. Custom mahjong sets can take something members already enjoy playing and make it their club’s own. Logos, club colors, recognizable landmarks, signature holes, tournament branding, and other details can be incorporated into tiles, cases, mats, and packaging. Rather than purchasing a standard set elsewhere, members can take home a version connected to the place and community they already value.
If you’re noticing a strong pull towards club-branded Mahjong tile sets, consider branding other products like Mahjong mats, racks, tile bags, carrying cases, scorecards, and other accessories. Sets can also be positioned as gifts for holidays, birthdays, member-guest events, tournament prizes, or groups of friends who regularly play together.
For shops interested in exploring custom options, we designated a whole page in the 2026 AGM Atlanta Market Gift Guide for custom mahjong vendors.
Looking Ahead
Golf shops have always evolved with the interests of their members. Whether that means embracing pickleball, wellness, lifestyle apparel, or now mahjong, what happens in the shop doesn’t have to be limited to what happens on the golf course. As members find other reasons to gather at the club, there may be other opportunities for the golf shop to be part of them.
Mahjong may have originated centuries ago, but its growing presence in golf and country clubs offers a timely reminder to pay attention to how your members are choosing to spend their time together. Their next favorite activity might just become your shop’s next merchandising opportunity.
