An award-winning business coach, Dan has helped countless independent retailers through his consultancy, The Wealthy Retailer, driving growth, profitability, and cash flow. In advance of the conference, Dan gave us a sneak peek into his retail strategies and insights:

AGM: With your experience across countless retail categories, what do you see as the biggest challenges facing independent retailers today, especially in the golf industry?

Dan Holman: I’d say the biggest challenges today can be boiled down to two key areas:

  1. Evolving Consumer Expectations: Today’s customers expect a seamless, personalized shopping experience across all touchpoints—whether online, in-store, or on mobile. For golf retailers, this means offering not just a product but an experience, such as custom club fittings, tailored advice, and engaging content that resonates with the modern golfer. The challenge is integrating these elements while still maintaining the personalized service that sets independent retailers apart from big-box competitors.
  2. Competing with Larger Players: In an industry dominated by major chains and e-commerce giants, independent golf retailers face stiff competition on pricing and inventory breadth. Larger retailers can offer deep discounts and vast product selections, which are tough for smaller businesses to match. Independent retailers must find a way to differentiate themselves—often by focusing on expertise, niche product lines, and superior customer service, such as offering high-touch services like club fitting or building relationships with local golf communities.

Ultimately, the successful independent retailers are the ones who embrace innovation while staying true to their roots of customer-centric service. It’s about balancing technology and personal expertise to create a unique value proposition that big-box stores simply can’t replicate.

AGM: What insights or strategies can AGM members expect to take away from your session to immediately implement in their golf shops?

Dan Holman: Attendees will learn current best practices driving retail success in today’s golf shops. These action steps will be clearly laid out allowing retailers to see their own shop through a renewed, objective view. More importantly, attendees will learn strategies to drive better performance and profitability right now and into the future!
