The Most Overlooked Part of the Job Interview: What You Ask at the End

Orange graphic background with question marks. Text reads “The Most Overlooked Part of the Interview: What You Ask at the End,” with AGM logo in the lower corner.

By the time an interview is wrapping up, most candidates are mentally exhaling. You’ve answered the questions, shared your experience, and made your case. Then comes:

“Do you have any questions for us?”

This is not a formality. It’s one of the most important moments of the entire interview. The questions you ask at the end don’t just show interest, they show how you think, what you value, and whether you’re already picturing yourself in the role.

Strong candidates don’t just answer well. They ask well too.

Why This Moment Matters More Than You Think

Anyone can prepare answers, but fewer people prepare thoughtful questions.

When you ask intentional, relevant questions, you signal:

    • You’re engaged, not just going through the motions
  • You’re thinking beyond the job description
    • You care about fit, not just getting a paycheck
  • You approach decisions with curiosity and strategy

Asking the right questions shifts your position from a “candidate being evaluated” to a “professional evaluating an opportunity.”

What Not to Ask

Before we get into what to ask, steer clear of questions that:

  • Can be easily found on the company website (e.g., “What does the company do?”)
  • Focus only on perks, salary, or time off: Save those for later stages in the interview process
  • Are overly generic: “What’s the culture like?” can feel like a filler question if it lacks context.

Instead, aim for questions that are specific and rooted in the conversation you just had.

Great Questions to Ask in a Job Interview

You don’t need to ask all of these. Just pick 3–5 that feel most natural for the specific role.

Role Clarity & Expectations

  • What does success look like in this role in the first 90 days?
  • What are the biggest priorities for this position right now?
  • What challenges has someone in this role faced in the past?

Team & Collaboration

  • How does this role interact with other departments?
  • What does strong collaboration look like here on a day-to-day basis?
  • How would you describe the working style of the current team?

Growth & Development

  • What opportunities are there for professional learning in this role?
  • How does the company typically support employees in developing new skills?
  • What does career progression look like from this position?

Leadership & Management Style

  • How would you describe your management style?
  • What does your ideal working relationship with this role look like?
  • How do you typically provide feedback and measure performance?

Company Direction & Strategy

  • What are the team’s biggest goals over the next year?
  • How is the company evolving or changing right now?
  • What excites you most about where the organization is headed?

Final Thought

Thoughtful questions don’t just fill time. They demonstrate how you work and how seriously you’re evaluating the role. It’s your final opportunity to shape how you’ll be remembered, so take time to consider what you’ll ask.

Sometimes, the right question is exactly what sets you apart. If you have a go-to interview question that always works, feel free to share it with our team at info@agmgolf.org. We’d love to hear it!
