By the time an interview is wrapping up, most candidates are mentally exhaling. You’ve answered the questions, shared your experience, and made your case. Then comes:
“Do you have any questions for us?”
This is not a formality. It’s one of the most important moments of the entire interview. The questions you ask at the end don’t just show interest, they show how you think, what you value, and whether you’re already picturing yourself in the role.
Strong candidates don’t just answer well. They ask well too.
Why This Moment Matters More Than You Think
Anyone can prepare answers, but fewer people prepare thoughtful questions.
When you ask intentional, relevant questions, you signal:
-
- You’re engaged, not just going through the motions
- You’re thinking beyond the job description
-
- You care about fit, not just getting a paycheck
- You approach decisions with curiosity and strategy
Asking the right questions shifts your position from a “candidate being evaluated” to a “professional evaluating an opportunity.”
What Not to Ask
Before we get into what to ask, steer clear of questions that:
- Can be easily found on the company website (e.g., “What does the company do?”)
- Focus only on perks, salary, or time off: Save those for later stages in the interview process
- Are overly generic: “What’s the culture like?” can feel like a filler question if it lacks context.
Instead, aim for questions that are specific and rooted in the conversation you just had.
Great Questions to Ask in a Job Interview
You don’t need to ask all of these. Just pick 3–5 that feel most natural for the specific role.

- What are the biggest priorities for this position right now?
- What challenges has someone in this role faced in the past?
