In today’s fast-paced and competitive business world, the concept of healthy company culture has gained significant attention. Many organizations strive to define and cultivate a culture that aligns with their values and promotes a positive work environment. One such approach that has been gaining traction is the embodiment of the principles of the book Grace Space. In an episode of Dr. Heather Penny’s podcast, “The Life You’re Made For,” Dr. Penny interviews the AGM’s very own CEO, Jennifer Morton, about the concept of Grace Space and how to use it to improve company culture.

Understanding Grace Space

Creating a space of grace, as articulated by Dr. Heather Penny in her book Grace Space, encompasses seven core practices. Some of these practices include:

  • Responding versus reacting – Choosing to engage productively when we are tempted to retaliate; choosing to understand when we are tempted to be right
  • Questioning versus accusing – Choosing curiosity when we’re tempted to leap into assumptions
  • Experiencing freedom versus control – Choosing to share power when we’re tempted to dominate
  • Trust versus fear – Choosing to believe when we’re tempted to panic

Dr. Penny emphasizes how these choices can be determining factors of how well you and your organization thrive. “Grace Space is pretty instinctive and intuitive,” says Dr. Penny. “What I’m trying to do as an author and a coach is to put language around it.” Embracing these principles allows individuals to navigate challenges, build trust, and create an environment where personal and professional growth is encouraged.

Successful Leadership

No one is born a successful leader. It takes time and experience to cultivate mindsets and action plans for situations that may arise. As Dr. Penny says in the synopsis of her book Grace Space, “A leader becomes great when they are put in hundreds of challenging situations and are forced to figure out the best course of action, not only for their team and the company as a whole, but for the environments they influence.” The goal of Grace Space is to help people see and receive the tools necessary to serve selflessly and with understanding. After all, the best leadership is service.

As Jennifer Morton says in the podcast episode, “Grace for the Journey,” “My purpose in leading this company is to build up my staff and let them thrive.” Your goal as a leader is not about control, but about guiding your employees towards greatness. Cultivating a space of grace as a leader means creating a culture where your staff feels comfortable innovating, making decisions, and failing without fear of retaliation. When these principles of grace, understanding, and curiosity are integrated into a company’s culture, the impact is transformative. Employees feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their best work. For example, the emphasis on responding versus reacting fosters open communication and conflict resolution, leading to a more harmonious and collaborative work environment. Additionally, questioning versus accusing encourages open mindedness and curiosity, enabling teams to explore new ideas and approaches without fear of judgment or being shut down.

Employee Well-being and Engagement

The embodiment of Grace Space principles directly impacts employee well-being and engagement. When individuals feel seen and heard, they are more likely to be emotionally invested in their work, leading to a better work ethic and a higher quality output. The freedom to be curious and explore new possibilities ignites creativity and passion. As a result, employees are more likely to stay with the organization, reducing turnover and creating a stable and committed workforce.

Application

Conclusion

By fostering an environment where employees see failure as an opportunity for growth, organizations can create a culture that promotes empathy, respect, collaboration, and success. As leaders and employees, we can embrace these principles, contributing to a workplace where individuals feel supported in their pursuit of personal and professional development.
