Insights from Ken Morton Jr.

Sales contests don’t have to feel stale. The right game or incentive can transform your retail floor into a space that encourages upselling, service, and creativity, all while keeping your team motivated. Try one or all of these eight ideas to energize your staff, recognize great work, and drive results.

1. The Sales Bingo Challenge

Goal: Encourage upselling and cross-selling
How it works:
Create a Bingo card with retail tasks like:

      • Sell a high-margin item
      • Upsell an accessory
      • Sign up a guest for the loyalty program
      • Receive positive guest feedback
      • First to complete a row wins a prize like a gift card, bonus, or extra break.

2. Mystery Prize of the Day

Goal: Motivate consistent effort
How it works:

    • Each day, place a sealed box or envelope with a mystery prize.
    • Choose the winner based on sales, service moments, or a random draw.
    • Prizes could be snack vouchers, shop credit, or even a half-day off.

3. Retail Royalty

Goal: Recognize top performance and attitude
How it works:

    • Weekly appoint a staff member as being “Retail Royalty” based on service, teamwork, or sales.
    • Winners can get a small crown or pin to wear, as well as a fun perk like a better shift pick or free lunch.

4. Product Knowledge Detective

Goal: Build product confidence
How it works:

    • Hide clues around the shop that are related to product features.
    • Staff solve the clues with trivia or demonstrations.
    • Correct answers earn a prize or raffle entry.

5. The Guest Experience Challenge

Goal: Elevate service and personalization
How it works:

      • Give points for things like remembering a guest’s name or making tailored recommendations.
      • Track points on a leaderboard and reward monthly winners with a prize or shout-out.

6. Social Media Star

Goal: Inspire brand engagement
How it works:

      • Encourage staff to submit creative retail content ideas (displays, photos, reels).
      • Feature the best on your social media or internal newsletter.
      • Reward winners with fun perks or recognition.

7. Team Takeover Days

Goal: Promote teamwork through friendly competition
How it works:

      • Split staff into teams that “take over” the shop on alternating days with themed outfits, decorations, or music.
      • Award points for creativity, engagement, or sales.

8. “Caught You Caring” Cards

Goal: Celebrate great behavior in real time
How it works:

      • Managers or peers hand out cards when they see standout service or teamwork.
      • Each card becomes a raffle entry for a monthly prize drawing.

Final Thought:

Motivated teams create better experiences for guests and for each other. With a mix of creativity, competition, and recognition, these fun games can help build a retail culture that is positive, proactive, and full of energy.
